The Crystal Library - Amethyst Crystal

Amethyst is a type of quartz crystal.  Its vibrant purple coloration is due to iron impurities in the crystal. Like all other forms of quartz, it is a 7 on the Moh's Hardness Scale.

Amethyst is a Greek word for "without drunkenness, " and was believed to ward off the affects of alcohol, in ancient times.  It is used today as a power stone, offering protection to those who wear it or have it in one's environment.  Amethyst eases the mind, allowing for restful sleep, deep meditation, and stress relief. It is also useful to relieve headaches.

Amethyst can be found abundantly in many places in the world, including Brazil, Mexico, Bolivia, and the USA.  Amethyst is the birthstone for February.
